Bookshelf

Welcome to Janetha’s Bookshelf
This isn’t just a list of books; it’s a reflection of the things I hold close—stories that made me laugh, lessons that made me stronger, and words that reminded me to keep going. I hope you’ll find something here that speaks to you, just as it did to me. As I continue to read books throughout my life, I will always come here to update this page.
Remember Me Now by Faitth Brooks-This book felt like a love letter written just for me from the big sister I never had. In fact, I read a snippet of it on TikTok, watch it to see why I loved this book so much. I read it during the summer of 2024 which was a pivotal moment of my life. I initially borrowed it from my library then realized it was the kind of book I need to have my own copy of to read when I need wisdom and nurturing. This book really spoke to the depths of my soul when it comes to faith, relationships, and gave me a greater sense of self love. Purchase from Amazon or Target.
Nice Girls (Still) Don’t Get the Corner Office by Lois P. Frankel– I believe every woman should read this book. It has truly transformed how I handle myself in the workplace. If you have ever found yourself saying “This may be a stupid question” or “This will only take a minute” then you need to read this book. Do you often refer to your job as “Oh I’m just the…” Are you always the one ordering everyone’s lunch at the office? Are you always the note taker at meetings even though that’s technically not your job? This book is for you too. This was another book that I initially borrowed from the library and then realized I needed my own copy to reread. Lastly, this book is how I found the courage to sit next to the CEO at a company sponsored gala, engage in conversation, and demonstrate the importance of my work. Purchase from Amazon or Half Price Books.
all about love by bell hooks– You think you know about love until you read this book. This book is a classic, I initially read it with a bookclub I was apart of. hooks talks about how the power dynamics of love through gender roles, materialism and how these factors contribute to what we know and experience about love. After reading this book it made me look at love differently, not just in relationships but in friendships, the workplace, and even deep within myself. This book is deep and it can trigger some emotions in you so when you read this one, keep some tissues nearby. Purchase from Amazon or Barnes & Noble.
Speak by Tunde Oyeneyin-This book nearly brought me to tears. If you’re not familiar with Tunde, she’s a Peloton instructor and a former makeup artist. Her book is motivational but it’s not overly “preachy” if you know what I mean. She writes about growing up as an overweight child of immigrant parents to becoming a makeup artist and then one of Peloton’s most admired instructors. I wrote about this one in a post about confidence, because this book will remind you of the beauty that is within yourself. It really impacted the way I see and take care of myself from the inside out. Purchase from Thriftbooks or Amazon or Barnes & Noble.
Walk Through Fire: A Memoir of Love, Loss, and Triumph by Sheila Johnson– There’s so much I can say about this one…it’s deep, thought provoking, and will have you shaking your head. Sheila Johnson was America’s first Black female billionaire and the co-founder of BET. Her book talks about things like her and her father passing as white so she could attend certain schools, how her father later abandoned their family and how that altered the course of her life, her self worth, and her idea of love. It was Sheila who sold her most prized possession, a violin she owned for nearly her entire life, to get the money needed to launch BET. She was married to the other co-founder (he who shall not be named!) for over 30 years and details the years of emotional abuse and infidelity. This book taught me resilience, you don’t know how strong you are until it’s your only choice. Purchase from Amazon or Target or Barnes & Noble.
Everyday Magic by Mattie James-This book serves as a guide on how to romanticize your everyday life. After reading this book I started incorporating everything showers into my weekly routine, where I do my entire skincare routine followed by exfoliating and moisturizing my entire body. Mattie is a wife and mother of 3 kids along with being an influencer and business owner. Using the acronym MAGIC: Meaningful, Aesthetically pleasing, Goal-oriented, Intentional, and Consistent—as a framework simple elevate our everyday tasks. There is so much beauty in maintaining a clean and organized home, being intentional about what you consume, and maintaining a grateful heart no matter what. With this book, you’ll want to read it with a highlighter along with a pen and notebook to take notes. Mattie teaches us that action and intention can get us the life that we want. This book is available at Brave and Kind Books, a bookshop with a purpose in Decatur, GA. You can also purchase from Barnes & Noble or Amazon.
